Class of 2025

The Maine Hot Flashes Basketball Team
L to R: Nancy Richardson, Nancy Fortin, Jo Lannin, Deb Smith, Coach Mike Giordano, Sue Dunn, Lorrayne Carroll, Eileen Monahan
It was at the 2003 National Senior Games in Virginia Beach where this team began. Jo and Nancy Fortin played on this 50-54 team, and Deb and Nancy Richardson coached because they weren’t old enough to compete. Jo and Nancy played with Nettie, Marty and Peggy.
At the 2005 National Senior Games in Pittsburgh Deb and Nancy Richardson were old enough to compete along with Jo and Nancy and a few other women. It was a 5th place finish out of 9 teams.
2007 the Games were in Louisville. Eileen, Sue and Coach G joined us for this tourney and the team finished in 5th place out of 8 teams. The team had a BIG win over the team from Syracuse, a team that they had lost to on many occasions
2009 the Games were in Palo Alto, CA on the Stanford Campus, where Rainie joined Eileen, Deb, Nancy F., Nancy R., Jo, Sue and Coach G on this mission.
The message was clear that this team was ready to compete at a high level and they did. The Hot Flashes were in Palo Alto with another Maine team, Triple Threat. Both teams were playing games every day and spending time together around the pool. It was the final day of the Triple Threat competition when the Maine Triple Threat team captured the first ever gold medal for a Maine team participating in the National Senior Games.
So following in the footsteps of Triple Threat, the Hot Flashes and coach Giordano went to work. They lost one game in the round robin tourney to the Alabama Slammers.
There was one division of 15 teams in the 55-59 age group. The Hot Flashes moved through the field of 15 teams. And on the 4th day of the tournament the Maine Hot Flashes became the 2nd Maine basketball team to win GOLD, by defeating the Alabama Slammers, the team they lost to earlier!
The team in different combinations of players, along with Coach G, have played in the national senior games in Houston, Cleveland, Minneapolis, Birmingham, Albuquerque, Fort Lauderdale, Pittsburgh, Iowa and the Maine Senior Games for more than 10 years.
This is a well-deserved honor for this team. Congratulations on being inducted into the Maine Senior Games Hall of Fame!
